Well, if you are on ETSY you know that they rolled out the new Search Ads today. I am trying it and will see how it goes. It really does help that there are stats now to track how things are working for you. In the mean time, I thought I would post a few tips on my experience selling on ETSY.
First off let me say that I started on ETSY in January of 2010 while I was still teaching school full time. I knew I wanted to quit teaching and have a baby and figured I better have something going to somewhat replace my income from school, but something I could do from home. So, I started my ETSY shop selling Pajamas- hence the name Purple Pajamas. One problem, every time I went to the fabric store, I would see all of this fabric and all I could think was, "What a cute pillow that would make!" So I completely changed my shop around, staying up to all hours of the night sewing to build up some inventory, and soon I was making sales left and right! I could barely keep up with it while teaching full time.
As time has passed, ETSY has changed a lot ,for the better in my opinion, and I have opened a second shop, Elisabeth Michael and my blog and website ElisabethMichael.com. I am now consolidating my two ETSY shops and selling only fabric out of one. So, this is what I have learned through it all...
1. Don't give up.
They say something like upwards of 85% of businesses fail in the first 6 months and that is because they quit. Determination is the key.
2. Add new items daily.
I can't stress this enough. I still have to remind myself of this when sales are slow. New items get you on the front page and also give your shop a fresh look to repeat customers. When you go back to a shop that you have purchased from, why are you going back? Usually to see if they have anything new right? If the department store sold all the same items for months on end, would you stop shopping there? My point exactly.
3. Don't be afraid to completely change directions and try something new.
Now obviously, you must stick with something at some point, but when I realized that I would rather make pillows than pajamas: I made the switch. I also completely changed the style of pillows and fabric I was offering at some point too. Not bc they weren't selling, but bc I wanted my shop to cater to different clientele and I wanted to go in a different direction entirely.
4. Be teachable...
If you see that what you are trying to sell, isn't selling, then sell something else or a different style. Now some people will tell you that you are artistic, be yourself and be unique, and I am definitely all for that, but if you are selling blue and mauve teddy bears and doilies, no offense, but you need to take a long hard look at what people want and are buying today. Something new and different or modern that no one has seen is fine, not something that has been around for years...unless it's vintage of course.
5. Do not underestimate yourself in your pricing.
I am amazed at how many people do this. I recently contacted quite a few ETSY sellers about buying wholesale from their shop and so many of them could only give me a 20% or so discount or told me they were already selling at a wholesale price. That is crazy! Once again, no offense, but if I am going to take all the time and effort to make something handmade, I am not going to make $10 on it! Call me crazy, but let me tell you this. You are worth more than you think. Think about this....(if you are selling close to wholesale price)
You can never have a 50% off sale to attract buyers bc you would be losing money.
You probably already are losing money and just don't realize it. (more on that in a minute)
The average store can sell something 80% off and still turn a profit. Why shouldn't you?
Your pricing shows what you value your products and workmanship at. So wholesale means you think your product is cheap. Sorry, but it's true.
6. Are you losing money on ETSY?
To determine whether you are making or losing money, you must factor in more than just the cost of the materials and supplies. You need to factor in EVERYTHING and I do mean everything.
That includes: materials, supplies, electricity (sewing maching, serger, iron etc.), water, heating and cooling, business cards, shipping bags or boxes, everything else used to ship items, and most importantly your time. And not just the time it takes you to make the item. What about the time to order the materials to make the item or to go to the store, the gas to get there, the miles you put on your car, the time listing it, the time taking pics, the time reading and learning things about your shop, and on and on I could go.
Take the time to sit down and figure out just how much is one business card? How much is one plastic bag you use to ship the item? (or whatever applies to you)
And last but definitely not least...you should be getting paid enough for the time you invest. Like more than you would working a 9-5 job. If I wanted to have a 9-5 job, I would go and get one- I don't. And my skill is more important to me than $10 an hour. If excavators can make $75/hr why can't I? I think sewing takes more skill than excavating :) IMHO
7. Set goals
If you really intend to make money and create a sustainable business, you must have goals and a plan to get to those goals. Write down: how much money you want to make per month, how much you are budgeting for advertising, where you are going to advertise, if you will use email marketing, how often you will use social media tweet, facebook etc. and of course BLOG!
I could talk forever, but let me just say, I love ETSY, I love what I do and you can too!
At home with my 6 month little boy and not going to a 9-5 job every day is therapy to my soul!
If you have some tips to share, please do. I would love to learn something new!

To Match or Not to Match
Today, I am having one of my favorite guest bloggers give us a little treat. This is Jen of "Opal Never Shouts" and I read her blog everyday. Her's is one of those I read after my son goes to bed while I drink a hot cup of tea or something comforting and just sit and enjoy myself.
To Match or Not to Match....
Get this! Almost one hundred percent of designer
rooms do not have a matching bedroom set. As in - it all is the same
color, came from the same place, and was purchased on the same day.
We understand it seems a lot less “fool proof” to
buy a bedroom set. Someone has already done the work for you. There are
no worries of mixing the wrong woods or mixing styles that don’t really
go. There is no messing it up, however, if you are feeling a little
brave, explore with us the genius of not having a matching set. We find
there is a lot more visual texture and variety in the room if it doesn't
all “match” or come in the same set. You will love each piece for it’s unique features and character that it brings to your space.
There is such lovely texture and color brought into the room just by the
variety of size, height and sheen of each of it's pieces. When
collecting your bedroom set there are two things to remember. One,
make sure that the nightstands are similar in height if not the same.
This will keep the room balanced and keep your room from feeling
lopsided. The second thing to remember is just
like the first - make sure that your lamps are similar in size,
especially height. Something that works great for us is to choose a wood headboard with a pretty stain and pair it with nightstands with a fun painted color, or visa versa. An easy way to get a designer bedroom is to use an upholstered headboard, it brings in a soft texture and will go well with many different finishes.
So what if you are thinking, “That's nice, I really like the idea, but I have all matching sets and don’t want to start over.” We have an idea to
solve this design puzzle. Try separating or mixing and matching some of
your bedroom set pieces through out your house. Maybe you swap dressers
from one room to the
next or a pair of nightstands with another. You could even try out a
small dresser as an entry chest or a unique end table as a nightstand.
This is a great way to have an eclectic, not so predictable, and “collected over time” kind of look. It is a sure way to make your home look like it is right out of a magazine and not brought right home from the furniture store.
So what's your take? Matching or not? We want to hear what you think about the matter.
Tomorrow I am doing a giveaway on "Opal Never Shouts" so make sure you sign up to win!

Fashion Friday
Well, I couldn't resist...I order two skirts from The Limited this morning. They are having a BOGO sale and on top of that I used a coupon code to get $20 off a $75 purchase so with shipping spent $70 and am getting two of my favorite skirts. Since I had a baby, you all know how it is fitting into things again, and I bought one of these skirts back in July while on vacation and loved it because it actually fit. Anyway, waited for them to go on sale and they did! Bought a brown and charcoal.
And then a few collections I love. Too bad I don't have the money to shop everyday all day bc I would! lol :) Anyway, I'm a collection girl. I generally buy one purse per summer/winter season and stick with them the whole time; and I like to buy a whole collection of mix and match items like the one below and wear over and over in different combos until I start over. It seems you're spending a lot, but over time you're not because it helps keep you (at least it does me) from buying random pieces here and there. Plus, when you don't have much closet space to deal with, not having a million somethings makes a big difference!
Later today, going to use my "Place Cash" on my 6 month old! What fun!
Any way you like to shop that helps you out?
xoxo

True Turquoise
Found a few ideas using Turquoise and thought I'd share some.
This is the cutest idea for an old door or front of just about anything that can easily be transformed.
This next room is about to become my Bedroom. I just recently switched my master bedroom to the smaller bedroom in my house to make room for all my Etsy stuff :) and have been wondering what to do with it. I already have taupe walls and white nightstands. Getting started on those curtains ASAP and the rest tomorrow!
This a such a great idea for an old door. It was revamped into a head board. So cool!
Just threw these dishes in because I love them and have one these pots in red. Heavy, but love cooking in it!

Custom Orders
I have done quite a few custom orders for people recently and thought I would share a couple. I LOVE to do these, because it is something different and out of the ordinary and I love to make new "creations." :)
This first one's pic isn't the greatest but this was originally a big (huge) blue ottoman that desperately needed some help. My client wanted a cover that was neutral had pleats so I created this for her and she added the nail heads. She said it fit perfectly which was great!

Sample of what she was looking for but in a different color...
Next is a work in progress (as you can see with the floor in the second photo) breakfast nook that had custom made benches with no cushions or anything on them. We used Waverly Lovely Lattice Lapis from Fabric.com and 2 in. foam for the zippered cushions and then Premier Prints Chartreuse Zig Zag for the 8 pillows. Working on roman shades for this client next. She's about to have her entire house furnished with my creations, which is fine with me! :)

Lastly, for today, I made this ottoman cover to add a little something to my office space and also painted some stripes on the desk which I recently posted about here.
If I ever have the time to get it all together, (hard to do with a 5 month old and 3 websites!) I will post my tutorial on how to make a custom ottoman cover.
Have a great weekend!

Pier One
Have you gotten your Pier One 20% off coupon in the mail? I did and can't wait to use it. I love Pier One because they have such "unique" things. I've posted a few small purchases I've made there recently and some others I LOVE...
Not a great pic, but these are my little set of cups and saucers and salt and pepper shakers from Pier One. The drapes on the left are also from Pier one.
I absolutely adore this lamp! Thinking about making one and posting it as a DIY project.
These peacock feather drapes are the ones shown in my pic above.
I have these and love them! They are perfect for a few minutes of silence and relaxation when Evan is asleep.:)
Remember a while back, I posted about putting a bench at the end of my bed? Well still haven't gotten around to it, but this one would be cute with a cushion.
If you've never been to Pier One, you must go! I promise you will not be disappointed. It is one of those places I could spend hours in just persuing every detail. :) Have a great day!
